Warning Signs Your Septic Tank Needs Pumping

High-pressure water jet cleaning the interior of a large drain pipe, removing accumulated dirt and sludge from the pipe walls.

For no apparent cause your yard has turned to mud? Every flush is accompanied by a gurgle from the drains? You put down an unpleasant odor in the vicinity of your septic system and wonder where it is coming from? Homeowners are wont to lose sleep over such things, but they generally have a single explanation: the tank wants some attention.

We at Loose Deuce Septic & Tank Services can help with that. A family run concern based here in the greater Eugene, Oregon area, we do it all from pumping to repairs and inspection. And if trouble arises we are on hand 24/7. Call (541) 652-8433 and let us discuss what you have noticed.

There is nothing like a septic tank to go about its business unobtrusively until it does not. Once the tank is overfilled the trouble will make itself known in short order. But for the most part the system will put up some warning before there is a complete backup, provided one is looking for it.

Slow Drains in the House

An isolated slow drain is often just a clog. When several fixtures are affected you have something more. The wastewater has nowhere to go when the tank is full and toilets, tubs and sinks will all become sluggish.

Should a plunger or some drain cleaner fail to put right the matter, then the source of the problem is probably further down in the system.

Gurgling in the Plumbing

Give your pipes a listen. Water and air should pass through without fuss; when they do not, you will hear it. Toilets and drains will gurgle as air gets trapped for want of the tank taking in water as it ought.

It is an early indication from your septic system so do not put it off.

Foul Odors

Your septic system is sealed to contain odors. If you are smelling sewage by the tank and drain field outside or near a drain indoors, that seal is being put under strain. A tank that is too full will force waste and gases where they do not belong.

You may be inclined to overlook it but a sewage smell that will not quit is the system saying it needs your help.

Soggy Ground or Standing Water

Make a tour of the drain field. Pooling water, ground that is wet in spite of fair weather or an odd expanse of green grass could mean the tank is spilling into the soil. The waste has to surface somewhere.

You would be wise to deal with this promptly as standing wastewater is not good for the family or pets.

Sewage Backups

The last thing anyone wants is for sewage to reappear in the lowest toilet or drain, yet that is what happens when capacity is exceeded. It is unsightly and can do damage to the home.

In the event of a backup there is no point in waiting, call us at (541) 652-8433.

The Case for Regular Pumping

Some homeowners only give their septic tank a thought after it has failed them. We would suggest a more sensible course is to pump on a regular basis commensurate with the size and demands of the household. An emergency is more expensive and trying than being proactive.

In between pumpings these are good practices:

  • Do not put on a number of laundry loads in a day
  • Wipes, grease and the like do not break down, so do not flush them
  • Refrain from using the drain field for heavy equipment or vehicles
  • Be mindful of peak water usage in the home
  • Have routine inspections to nip small problems in the bud
  • Make note of the date of the last pumping
